Great first meeting, thanks for putting it all together, Ross! Justin visited from Portland to help us get started, and was surprised with our first meeting numbers, apparently way above average.
It was good to meet people I’ve only known on twitter, and I discovered a Java User Group is in town (web site https://sjug.dev.java.net/ but they’re primarily active on mailing list linked from there). Also found out about a great Salem-specific info site: http://www.salemites.com/
We mused on how the Salem tech community will be different than Portand’s. We found it interesting that where the Portland tech people were now reaching out to the non-tech community to apply their skills, here in Salem it was an arts/video skilled group that was working to bring the tech community together.
When this started in Portland last year, people said there were so many tech groups already that few would show up for another weekly thing. In fact, their meetings turned out pretty huge. Other groups were focused on a technical topic with fun on the side, but this was fun & social first, and people responded to that.
Anyway, look forward to seeing you all next month, and probably a bunch of new people. It looks like we’re going for monthly meetings right now, first Thursdays, same time/place, so next will be Thursday July 2nd, I think. Is that right, Ross?
Next up, IgniteSalem, Thursday June 18th, 7pm, at Northern Lights!
